We all love an action hero and what is more entertaining than sitting down to watch a movie, a little bit of popcorn in hand, ready to watch your favorite superhero about to take on the world? What if I told you that kind of superpower was available to each and every one of us? You don’t need to be imbued with some special interplanetary life-force….nope, ……you just need the special superpowers available locally, anytime, to any of us, if you just know where to look!

In our last blog we talked about the many kinds of irritants that can cause damage to our skin. We even told you what ingredients to avoid when shopping for skin creams. Well today, I want to share with you the superpowers available from a different list of ingredients, ones that will help you with achieving that younger, healthier looking skin we all desire. What is the superpower? ANTIOXIDANTS of course!

No doubt you’ve heard of them before. Everything from skincare products to food and even shampoo, conditioner and vitamins all claim to have powerful antioxidants in them. It’s likely you’re not even paying attention to the claims anymore but I’ve done some research and you really should be. Here is what I’ve found out and I can’t wait to share them with you today.

The ”Superstars,” as I referred to them in my last blog, are a group of superpower antioxidants consisting of both natural and synthetic ingredients that can help reduce free radical damage. Free radical damage happens on molecular level. It’s unseen and you can’t feel it happening but it’s the most damaging to our skin. Antioxidants can help prevent the degenerative effects that sun exposure, pollution, smoking and other harmful life choices can have. They help reduce inflammation and it’s inflammation that causes the destruction of collagen and elastin, and that prevents skin from healing. This is the kind of superpower you want working for you and that’s why I say antioxidants are an essential part of any anti aging moisturizer. It’s time to start paying attention to the claims about antioxidants and pay careful attention to the list of ingredients in your product of choice.

Here is a lit of some of the most known “Superstar” antioxidants so you know what to look for the next time you go shopping:

Coenzyme Q10

Grape seed extract

Green tea

Soybean sterols

Superoxide dismutase

Vitamin C

Vitamin E

Tea tree oil

Now everyone has the power to be a superhero. Take advantage of this knowledge and make sure your skincare product of choice contains antioxidants. The good news is that any combination of these ingredients is powerful. One is great but combined they are even more effective! Put the power of an “antioxidant cocktail” to work for you. If your moisturizer doesn’t have antioxidants to fight irritants and inflammation, don’t waste of your money because it’s of no benefit to your skin.
